What’s Next For Kaitlyn Hunt, The Teen Charged With A Felony For Same-Sex Relationship With Classmate →
On Friday night, 18-year-old Kaitlyn Smith and her family went public with their story: Kaitlyn was charged with a felony stemming from a relationship she had with a 15-year-old girl at her high school. The response in the 48-hours that followed, Kaitlyn’s father Steven Hunt told ThinkProgress in an interview, was “extraordinary.” Already, nearly 40,000 […]Of all the stories in the news today, this one hit me pretty hard. I’m a heterosexual female, so I cannot entirely relate to some of specifics of the situation, but I am filled with empathy for this beautiful young lady. Both of them in fact. Also, as a Christian, I am ashamed at the conduct of the parents of the younger girl, given that they apparently claim to be Christians. There is nothing Christian whatsoever in their behavior. The hypocrisy in this situation is infuriating, and the younger girl certainly deserves love and acceptance from her family instead of this cruelty, regardless of her orientation. But, I digress….
Whether Kaitlyn and her partner were gay or straight, male or female, this is unjust and morally wrong. What happens between two consenting people is simply not my business, the government’s, or anyone else’s. Now, of course I understand the desire to draw a line to prevent undue advantage being taken of children who are too young to understand the choice they are making, but this situation is not an appropriate place to draw the line. Especially given that the relationship began before the older girl was a legal adult, and was entirely consensual.
Perhaps what is most upsetting to me is that there are men and women all over this country who have been raped, sometimes violently, and there is a gargantuan backlog of rape kits, where so many have yet to see justice done. And yet state and local resources are being used for this situation, where both parties were willing (though underage) participants? Perhaps some of our limited resources should go toward taking down true criminals, not destroying one beautiful young woman’s life while the other is crushed by the cruelty of her own family.
In the end, laws do not change on their own. I am not a resident of Florida, so there is little I can do myself about this particular situation, but most of our states have similar laws that are, frankly, absurd. This is not the first time this kind of thing has happened. Let’s try and make it the last.
